Sustainability

We do not use the word sustainable loosely. The extraction of precious metals and gemstones has real environmental and human consequences, and no honest jeweller can claim otherwise. Lab-grown diamonds require significant energy to produce. Natural diamond mining displaces land and, in some regions, communities. Our approach is not to claim we have solved this. It is to make deliberate decisions at every point in our supply chain, to be transparent about what those decisions involve, and to continue improving them. We believe the most credible thing we can say on the subject is: here is exactly what we do, and here is what we are still working on.

Maison Thaevia is one of a small number of fine jewellery houses that works equally and openly with both natural and lab-grown diamonds. We do not treat one as superior to the other, because the reality is more nuanced than that framing allows. Natural diamonds form over billions of years and are finite. Responsibly sourced natural diamonds support regulated mining industries that, in countries like Botswana, Namibia, and Canada, provide significant employment and community infrastructure. We source only from suppliers who comply with the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme and, where possible, from operations with independently verified ethical and environmental practices. Every natural diamond above 0.30ct supplied by the Maison carries an IGI, GIA, or HRD certificate with full provenance traceability. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds — the difference is origin, not quality. They require no mining and produce no land displacement. However, their production is energy-intensive. We source our lab-grown stones from producers who operate on renewable or low-carbon energy where available, and we are transparent with clients about which facilities their stone came from upon request. We offer both because we believe our clients deserve to make an informed choice — not to be steered by our preference or by the margin on either product.

All Maison Thaevia pieces are made in solid gold — 9kt, 14kt, or 18kt — or platinum. We do not use gold vermeil, gold fill, or hollow construction. This is both a quality position and a longevity one: a solid gold piece can be repaired, resized, re-polished, and worn for generations. A plated piece cannot. We offer recycled gold as an option on request at no additional cost for most pieces. Recycled gold is chemically identical to newly mined gold and carries the same hallmarks. We visit them. We know the people who make our pieces.

The majority of Maison Thaevia's range is made to order. This is how luxury fine jewellery has always worked, and it remains the most honest model: we make what is needed, when it is needed, to the specification of the person who will wear it. We do not hold large quantities of finished stock. We do not produce seasonal collections that are discounted and replaced. This is not primarily an environmental position — it is a quality position — but the consequences are the same: significantly less waste, no unsold inventory, and pieces made with care rather than in volume.

The most sustainable piece of jewellery is one worn for decades — or passed down. The least sustainable is one discarded after a season. Every decision we make about material, construction, and finish is made with longevity in mind. We use the best alloys for durability. We check settings before a piece leaves the atelier. We offer lifelong repair and maintenance services. We design pieces that are not tied to a moment in trend. We would rather sell one piece that is kept for thirty years than ten that are replaced. This is the oldest and most effective sustainability argument in fine jewellery — and the one that requires the least qualification.

Our presentation boxes are made from FSC-certified board with a cotton-velvet interior. No virgin plastics are used in our packaging. The outer transit box is fully recyclable corrugated board with paper-based padding. We do not over-package. One box, one pouch, the certificates you need — nothing more. We are in the process of reviewing our tissue and ribbon materials with the same standard in mind and will update this page when that work is complete.

Transparency includes being honest about what we have not yet resolved. Our shipping is insured and tracked, which requires road and air freight — we have not yet offset this meaningfully, and we will not claim to until we have a credible programme in place. We are exploring partnerships with verified carbon removal organisations and expect to have something concrete to announce in 2025. Our coloured stone supply chain — sapphires, rubies, and emeralds — is harder to trace than diamonds. We are working with a specialist ethical sourcing consultant to build better traceability into these materials. Until that work is complete, we source from established Antwerp dealers operating under EU import regulations, which provide a floor but not the ceiling we are aiming for.
