Advance Diamond Precision: Symmetry, Hearts & Arrows

Beyond the headline cut grade lies a finer layer of craftsmanship — the precision with which every facet is placed. When a round brilliant is cut with near-perfect symmetry, a repeating optical pattern appears: eight arrows when viewed from above and eight hearts from below. Known as Hearts & Arrows, this pattern is visible proof that a diamond has been cut to exacting angles, so that light is returned evenly across the whole stone rather than in patches. It is the difference between a diamond that sparkles and one that seems almost lit from within.

Cut grade tells you most — but not everything

A laboratory cut grade of Excellent covers proportions, polish and symmetry together, and for the vast majority of buyers it is all the assurance they need. But two Excellent-cut diamonds are not always equal. Within that top grade there is still a range, and the most precisely cut stones sit at its very peak. Precision cutting sacrifices more of the rough crystal to achieve flawless alignment, which is why these diamonds are rarer and command a premium.

What Hearts & Arrows actually shows

The pattern is a by-product of optical symmetry. For eight crisp, evenly shaped arrows to appear, the pavilion facets on the underside must be aligned to within fractions of a degree; for eight full hearts to form, the same is true of their counterparts. If the cutting is even slightly off, the arrows blur, the hearts split or distort, and the pattern breaks down. In other words, a clean Hearts & Arrows image cannot be faked — it exists only when the geometry beneath it is genuinely precise.

This matters because symmetry governs how consistently light travels through the diamond. A precisely cut stone returns light uniformly across its surface, avoiding the dull zones and light leakage that can appear in less exact stones, even well-graded ones.

Does every buyer need it?
