Natural and lab-grown diamonds are the same material — pure crystallised carbon — with the same brilliance, hardness and beauty. The only real difference is origin. A natural diamond formed deep within the Earth over one to three billion years; a lab-grown diamond is created in a matter of weeks in a laboratory that recreates those conditions. They are optically, physically and chemically identical, and only specialised equipment can tell them apart. Because they are not rare in the geological sense, lab-grown diamonds typically cost sixty to eighty-five per cent less at the same quality — a genuine choice, not a compromise.

How each one is made
Natural diamonds crystallised under immense heat and pressure roughly 150 kilometres below the surface, then travelled upward over aeons in volcanic rock before being mined, cut and polished. Lab-grown diamonds reach the same result by two methods. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) mimics the Earth's own conditions directly, while Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) grows a crystal layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas. Both produce real diamond — not an imitation.
A crucial distinction: not a simulant
A lab-grown diamond must not be confused with a diamond simulant such as cubic zirconia or moissanite. Simulants merely look like diamond and are made of entirely different materials, with different hardness and light behaviour. A lab-grown diamond is diamond in every measurable respect; it will test as diamond, wear like diamond and last a lifetime. The distinction between grown and simulated is the one that truly matters.
Value and price
Because a laboratory can produce fine diamonds reliably and relatively quickly, supply is not constrained by geology, and prices are markedly lower. At the same colour, clarity and cut, a lab-grown diamond commonly costs a fraction of its natural counterpart — which means a larger or higher-graded stone for the same budget. It is worth knowing that lab-grown prices have been falling as production expands, so their resale value is generally limited; a natural diamond is more likely to hold value over time. Which matters more depends entirely on what you want from the piece.
